TVNZ - Green's nitrate pollution levy will help farmers 'make the transition to more sustainable' farming says James Shaw

Farmers would be slugged a nitrate pollution levy and new dairy conversions would be banned under a Green Party plan to reduce water pollution.

Farmers would be encouraged to diversify into areas including sheep and deer milk under a proposal outlined by leader James Shaw in Wairarapa today.

But Federated Farmers has slammed the plan as discriminatory and says it threatens family businesses.
